A 20th Century Phenomenon: Barbie Through the Decades

The Beloved Barbie Doll

Since her debut in 1959, Barbie has become an international symbol of beauty, fashion, and imagination. Touting her famous slogan, "You Can Be Anything," Barbie has engaged in over 250 careers and inspired millions of young girls to dream big.

Through the decades, Barbie has followed and sparked a number of fashion trends and exciting accessories. Barbie's evolution can be seen through changing trends in makeup, clothing, dream houses, accessories, furniture, cars, body types, careers, and friends.

Growing up, my three sisters and I played with Barbie dolls just about every day. I fondly remember dressing them up in 2000s-era clothing, feeding them miniature food items, and setting up furniture in the now-vintage '90s dreamhouse. As such, Barbie holds a special place in my heart, and I enjoy comparing all the decades of Barbie.

This website provides a little look into the Barbie doll's evolution over the 20th century, from its original look in the 1960s up 'till the trends of the turn of the century. I hope you enjoy!
