Though known for their high speeds, most sighthound breeds are considered low-exercise dogs. They still need regular exercise, but not nearly as much as other popular breeds like huskies, border collies, or German shepherds. Many sighthound owners call their dogs “couch potatoes,” because they are content to lie around all day.
Being a part of the hound group, sighthounds are also remarkably stubborn–or, to use the professional term, “unbiddable.” This makes them harder to train as they are not easily motivated by external factors. It’s also not recommended that they ever go off-leash in public, as they are very slow to return once called. If your sighthound sees a little critter, don’t expect it to listen to your desperate pleas to come back.
Sighthounds may be lazy, but they also need lots of space and time to run. It’s recommended that potential owners have some sort of access to large but enclosed space for their dogs to run.
