Back in 1985 in Tokyo, Japan, a toy company called Epoch created Sylvanian Families. While this name stuck in Japan and the UK, in 1993 they became known as Calico Critters to US and Canadian consumers. Almost an instant hit, these small, anthropomorphized toys swept across the world in popularity and demand. They are meant to replicate a peaceful society with an emphasis on wholesome hobbies such as baking, enjoying nature, and spending time with one another. Although these toys were originally created with a younger audience in mind, that of children ages three to ten, Epoch's target audience has shifted slightly over the years to include teens and young adults.
This is Freya Chocolate, a rabbit who is part of the "Chocolate Dipped Bunny Series".
She is arguably one of the most popular characters sold as part of the Sylvanian universe,
often depicted as the main character image or icon for their website and toy stores.
With all their popularity, it is no wonder that Calico Critters have persisted so well over the years.
In 2025, they celebrated their 40 year anniversary with specially-released character sets.
Freya was featured in both of them.
