Internet Infamy

In more recent years, an Instagram user named @moletowndrama, previously known as @sylvaniandrama, has gone viral several times for their adult-themed, satirical content using Calico Critters. This content went so viral, in fact, that Epoch saw it and a lawsuit was even filed against the creator for "copyright infringement" and "irreparable injury". When the creator stopped posting videos for a period of time and the news came out, everything clicked but people were mad—rightfully so. The lawsuit seemingly lasted only 3-4 months before being dropped by Epoch since both the toy company and the creator came to a compromise. The creator had to change their username and profile picture but could continue posting content under the notion that it was all parody.

These videos first became popular during the pandemic (because what else were we doing), but have since taken off and many people have made their own videos with similar themes.

This video is a fan-made compilation of several of @moletowndrama's more popular reels, posted previously to both TikTok and Instagram.

Blind Bags

Exclusively featuring baby critters, Epoch began releasing "Blind Bags" in the US in 2020. They became popular very quickly with their different themes and tiny accessories to accompany each character you could possibly get. Many of the sets also feature a special mystery character!

This particular product is very popular among teen and young adult collectors as they are more convenient and less expensive than purchasing an entire playset. Although, they can sometimes be a bit tricky to find.

Retailers such as Hot Topic and Barnes and Noble tend to carry them.

Keychains & Charms

Part of the reason why Epoch has shifted their target audience to be a bit older, particularly for certain products, is because older collectors began adding their own creative twists to their critters.

Here you can see a collector-made keychain being sold by HookedTreasuresTN on Etsy. These creations have become increasingly more popular.

Like any company does, Epoch saw how popular products like these were getting
and started releasing official keychains of their own, as you can see here with Freya.

Is the rise in popularity of these trinkets also a recession indicator? The prices certainly wouldn't make you think so, but we often see people turning toward nostalgic, whimsical products or ideas when times get tough. And with most toys that have such longevity, the quality of these critters has decreased, but thankfully not by much. The most significant change has been with there facial features seeming to soften and their clothing getting significantly brighter over the years.
