Starter Pokemon

When a player begins a Pokemon game, they get to choose their first Pokemon to join them on their adventure of catching wild Pokemon, battling other trainers, and filling out your Pokedex. Every game has three "starter" Pokemon for the user to choose. These Pokemon are always grass, water, and fire types. Each generation has new starter Pokemon. In most games, all three of the starter Pokemon are very rarely found in the wild, so choose wisely!

I'll introduce you to three sets of starter Pokemon below. If you're interested in learning more about other starter Pokemon, check out this blog post that talks about all the starter Pokemon.

Bulbasaur, a grass-type Pokemon that looks like a green frog with a plant bud on its back
Charmander, a fire-type pokemon that looks like an orange dragon with a flame on its tail
Squirtle, a water-type pokemon that looks like a light blue turtle

Bulbasaur

Bulbasaur is the first Pokemon in the Pokedex. It can be found in the Kanto region and is part of the first generation of Pokemon. It is a dual grass-poison type. Bulbasaur is an amphibian-like Pokemon with green skin and a green plant bulb on its back, which contains whip-like vines that it uses to attack.

Charmander

Charmander is a fire type Pokemon from the Kanto region. It is also part of the first generation of Pokemon. Charmander is an orange, reptile Pokemon with a flame on its tail. The flame can indicate Charmander's health, meaning that it is not healthy when the flame is low, but healthy when the flame is high.

Squirtle

Squirtle is a water type Pokemon from the Kanto region, and it is the last Pokemon in the generation one starter set. It is a tiny blue turtle with a brown shell. Squirtle often attacks other Pokemon by spraying water from its mouth. Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur are the starter Pokemon in the Pokemon Blue, Red, Green, FireRed, and LeafGreen games.

Turtwig, a grass-type Pokemon that looks like a turtle with a twig and leaf on its head
Chimchar, a fire-type pokemon that looks like an orange monkey
Piplup, a water-type pokemon that looks like a small, light blue penguin

Turtwig

Turtwig is a grasss type starter from the Sinnoh region, and is part of the fourth generation of Pokemon. It is a small green and yellow turtle with a brown shell and a seedling growing out of its head. If Turtwig gets thirsty, the seedling will wilt. Turtwig thrives in sunny conditions, drawing energy from the sun.

Chimchar

Chimchar is a fire type Pokemon from the Sinnoh region. It is an orange monkey with a flame for a tail. When Chimchar feels sick, the flame is very low, and when Chimchar sleeps, the flame goes out.

Piplup

Piplup is a water type Pokemon from the Sinnoh region. It is a small, light blue penguin. Some people think its darker blue feathers around its shoulders and on its back look like a cape, while the darker blue feathers on its head look like a crown. Does Piplup's color scheme look familiar to you? Because Piplup is my favorite Pokemon, I used its colors for this site's color scheme. Piplup, Chimchar, and Turtwig are the starter Pokemon for Pokemon Shining Pearl, Brilliant Diamond, Platinum, Diamond, and Pearl.

Sprigatito, a grass-type Pokemon that looks like a green kitten
Fuecoco, a fire-type pokemon that looks like a little, orange crocodile/dragon
Quaxly, a water-type pokemon that looks like a white duckling with a blue pompadour hairdo

Sprigatito

Sprigatito is the grass type starter Pokemon from the newest generation of Pokemon, generation nine. It can be found in the Paldea region. It is a light green cat. When Sprigatito grooms its fur, it absorbs moisture in the air, which helps it photosynthesize.

Fuecoco

Fuecoco is a fire type Pokemon from the Paldea region. It is a red crocodile-like creature with a yellow belly. Fuecoco uses the yellow scales on its belly to absorb heat from other sources to turn into fire energy.

Quaxly

Quaxly is a water type Pokemon from the Paldea region. It is a white duck with a large blue pompadour-style hairdo. It uses its legs to swim through strong currents and attack other Pokemon. Quaxly, Fuecoco, and Sprigatito can be found in Nintendo's latest Pokemon games: Pokemon Violet and Pokemon Scarlet.
